Bijou Cross-Country: Informal 4 km marked trail across Bijou Community Park. No trail fee, but no rental equipment or lessons are available. Take Hwy. 50 to Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA. 530-542-6056.

Hope Valley Cross-Country Ski Center: 60 miles of trails, 10 groomed, in meadow and forest. Children can ski in the new mini-ski area. Staff escorts guests on Full Moon Tours, Wildlife Tours and Backcountry Skills Seminars. No trail fees are charged, but they rely on voluntary donations. Lessons and rentals.
